Yoga Therapy: Principals, Scope & Education

Gary Kraftsow & Desikachar: Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga. It is oriented towards eliminating, reducing, or managing symptoms of suffering, improving functioning, preventing recurrence and movement towards health, well-being, and changing our relationship to the condition.

Yoga therapy recognizes the multidimensional nature of experience. Recognizes our essential nature as Whole. Recognizes that we can influence the direction of change by the intelligent application of the appropriate methods. Emphasizes the importance of personal practice.

Institute for Living Yoga Therapy & Training School

"Yoga therapy was something to look forward to each week. I knew that I would get some “me time” and have a chance to rest and recharge. I found it reaffirmed my sense of agency to take more control over my own wellbeing. It was great to have weekly reminders of the value of taking time out and looking after myself properly. Working with the body is a great alternative to other modalities and Maya holds such a comfortable and nurturing space, allowing space to experiment and grow. Maya was extremely kind, patient, and a great listener. I felt supported, encouraged, and nurtured in my wellbeing journey." - Jacqui
