Yoga Therapy

As a compassionate witness, I'd be honored to support your journey toward well-being, embodied healing, and a deeper sense of wholeness.

Yoga therapy offers a trauma-informed holistic and personalized approach to healing, weaving together yogic tools such as mindfulness, meditation, movement, and breathwork. Through the lens of yoga’s teachings, we create a framework specific to your needs and oriented toward well-being and vitality, aiming to cultivate a deeper presence physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Yoga therapy uses several modalities that support the nervous system and facilitate healing from trauma. The approach is to invite presence and awareness, rather than prescription. It helps cultivate your inner resources with support and connection, enhancing your ability to become better able to navigate your inner and outer landscapes within the human experience with more ease and less distress.

In session, we may use a variety of practices to support embodied well-being. Practices may include:

  • Breath
  • Mindfulness
  • Movement
  • Meditation
  • Visualization
  • Chanting
  • Journaling
  • Art Therapy
  • Guided Self-Inquiry

Yoga principles and recommendations may be offered to support your daily rhythm and lifestyle choices, along with referrals appropriate to your needs.

"Yoga therapy with Maya was a real treat and I always found myself looking forward to our weekly sessions. Maya is a very skillful and heart led teacher.

Over the course of our sessions, I felt a great sense of trust, comfort, and support had developed between us. I felt held and nurtured in my wellbeing journey and felt that my digestive issues eased during our practice together.

Maya is kind and knowledgeable and integrates different modalities into each session. I enjoyed our experimentation together and the calmness and relaxation I felt as a result. I have no hesitation in recommending her services and feel grateful for my experience. Thank you!" - Jacqui

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy is a holistic, trauma-informed approach to healing that integrates breath, movement, mindfulness, and meditation to support well-being. Unlike a general yoga class, yoga therapy is personalized to your unique needs and focuses on cultivating resilience, reducing stress, and fostering greater ease physically, emotionally, and mentally.

How is Yoga Therapy Different from a Regular Yoga Class?

While traditional yoga classes focus on movement and breath in a group setting, yoga therapy is one-on-one (or in small therapeutic groups) and tailored specifically to your needs. It considers your personal history, current challenges, and wellness goals, offering a more individualized and therapeutic approach. I sometimes say it's where talk therapy meets embodied practice.

Who Can Benefit from Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy can support individuals experiencing:

  • Stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Chronic pain or illness
  • Trauma and nervous system dysregulation
  • Digestive issues and sleep disturbances
  • A desire for deeper self-awareness and holistic well-being

Sessions are adaptable for all bodies and personalized for all levels of experience.

What Can I Expect in a Yoga Therapy Session?

Each session is customized to meet your current needs. A typical session may include:

  1. Centering and Check-in: Grounding through breath and gentle reflection on your current physical, mental, or emotional state.
  2. Personalized Practice: Tailored movement, breathwork, and mindfulness techniques to support your goals.
  3. Integration and Reflection: A closing moment to absorb the practice and explore any insights or takeaways.

The focus is on cultivating awareness, presence, and curiosity without force. Insights may emerge, recommendations may be extended. We allow for your inner wisdom, goals, and yogic teachings to be our guide. Over time, this approach strengthens your inner resources and enhances your ability to navigate life with greater agency and ease, no matter the storms.

How Many Sessions Are Recommended?

One session can offer valuable insight, but many find that 4-6 sessions help establish a foundation. Deeper shifts often emerge over 10-12 sessions or more. Some clients continue ongoing for a year or longer, integrating yoga therapy as a steady support in their well-being journey.
